Open Door Policy

The issue in this cartoon is that many nations were acting like animals and were very cruel to China. The cartoon shows all the countries as if they were animals and a dragon which represents China dead on the floor. The cartoonists message was that this was not a positive event for China or it's culture. The  Dragon(China) had been harmed which would have effected many citizens and their cultures. I can see how some people may believe that America and other nations were just trying to help. The cartoon shows that the animals look concerned and worried that they hurt China. The author used symbolism to add effectiveness to this cartoon. The animals each represent their own country such as a dragon which represented China or and Eagle which represented America. The author also used exaggeration. The countries weren't actually animals they just acted wild and reckless to the point where it didn't turn out well for any of the nations. I agree with this cartoon because I support the Anti-Imperialists. The cartoon negatively portrays the Open Door Policy because China ends up  in a horrible position.

Spanish American War

The issue in this political cartoon is that America was picking too many territories. The basket in this political cartoon is almost full with apples that show territories that were gained. The cartoonist's message is that America needed to consider the amount of land that they had gained and how it would affect the U.S. later. The full basket makes America look almost too powerful and that it would result in war. I know that many people would believe that America was trying to gain a strong image from the victories. The cartoonist used symbolism when writing this cartoon. The apples and the tree represent the countries and all the possible options to take over and Uncle Sam shows America. The author also uses labeling. The apples are all labeled as different territories or countries that had already been gained or could possibly be gained. I agree with this cartoon because it shows America as greedy and disrespectful to other nations and their policies. This is because Uncle Sam is shown as calm and picking them like it has no impact on other countries.

Roosevelt Corollary

The issue in this cartoon is that Roosevelt was not paying attention to how the Roosevelt Corollary affected other countries. In the cartoon above, it shows Roosevelt not paying attention and aiming a canon at a British ruler's head. The author's message is that the doctrine gave Roosevelt and America to much power to where it negatively influenced others. I understand how many would think that the Roosevelt Corollary affected the western hemisphere positively. The canon shown in the cartoon is very big and looks very powerful. The cartoonist uses symbolism to be persuasive. The canon represents American influence as well as the Monroe Doctrine and the Roosevelt Corollary. The author also uses labeling to add an effect. He labels The canon so that the readers understand what it represents. they also labeled the boat as U.S., Europe's border, and Santo Domingo which was one of the territories that the Roosevelt Corollary would protect. This cartoon supports my opinion on imperialism because it is a negative approach to Roosevelt's Corollary.

Open Door Policy

The issue in this political cartoon is that China had no say in who how the countries would split up the territory. It shows the Chinese man getting angry at the other countries and the way they are splitting up the country. The cartoonists message is that the Open Door Policy was not a civil way to treat a country. It shows no one paying attention to what China had to say and he is being completely ignored. I see how other people may think that this was just a form of imperialism and China was one of the countries victims. As it shows, many of the countries were very powerful and influential countries such as Germany. The cartoonists uses symbolism because the men and women sitting around the table are representing powerful countries that wanted a piece of China and the pizza represents China being chopped up and allotted to all the nations. The author also uses labeling because on the pizza it reads Chinese or China to show what the countries were dividing. This political cartoon supports my position on imperialism because I am against it. It shows that Imperialism was cruel and unfair to many countries.

Panama Canal

The issue in the cartoon is that the Panama Canal was unfair to Panamanians. The cartoon shows Roosevelt taking over Panama. The message is that although the canal would save American money, it was not the right thing to do. The cartoon shows a man trying to stop Roosevelt from destroying their land but fails to do so. I can see how some Pro-Imperialists may argue that it would benefit both America and Panama in a lot of ways. This is because Panama would get to be a part of American's success and power. The cartoonist uses labeling to make this persuasive. For example, the man holding a flag that says new treaty to try and stop Roosevelt's operation as well as land masses with the names of Spanish territories such as Bogota. They also used exaggeration because Roosevelt is much larger as well as his shovel that he is using to dig the canal. This supports my opinion because it is an Anti-Imperialist cartoon. I don not believe this was a fair way for America to get what they hoped for and portrays Roosevelt in a negative way.

Panama Canal

The  issue in the political cartoon above is that Roosevelt was reckless when trying to gain the Panama Canal. For example, Roosevelt is pulling a ship a ship through the Caribbean in order to make the canal. The cartoonist's message is that Roosevelt acted like a big brother and was thoughtless. The cartoon shows Teddy Roosevelt as a giant that Just steps over the sea. I understand how some people may agree with Roosevelt's methods. An argue may be that he just wanted to help America's economy. The cartoonist used exaggeration. Teddy Roosevelt is made larger to look more powerful and alarming. The author also uses symbolism. The boat that Roosevelt is pulling represents the American army and all the advantages to the U.S.A when building the canal. This supports my position on imperialism because I support the Anti-Imperialists. The cartoon shows Roosevelt and his ways of influence in a very negative way.

Annexation of Hawaii

The cartoon above is showing that the annexation of Hawaii was not a fair fight. It shows America hogging Hawaii and not sharing it with any of the other countries and was not mindful of Hawaii's opinion on it. The cartoonist's message was that America acted like they were  the most powerful and all mighty. this is because Uncle Sam is holding back the other countries and mindlessly stabbing Hawaii with the fork. I understand how some people may see it as America trying to expand in a peaceful way. Uncle Sam also looks kind and not menacing. The cartoonist uses symbolism to add effectiveness. Uncle Sam and the other men are representing countries that were eager to gain Hawaii and the fork represents American imperialism. The author also uses analogies because the fork and the Hawaiian meal are to American influence and the actual territory itself. The cartoon supports my position because I support Anti-Imperialism. The cartoon shows that America does not worry about what other countries or Hawaii had to say and was overly powerful.

Purchase of Alaska

In this cartoon the issue is that Alaska has no value and was a waste of American money. The cartoon shows a man asking a mindless polar bear to vote in the election. The cartoonists message is that Alaska should never have been admitted as a state. In the cartoon it shows Alaska as having no purpose. I understand how some people may have thought that this portrayed Alaska as a friendly fluffy polar bear because he is not attacking the person in the cartoon, The author uses labeling to show that he is taking votes such as the stand in the background that says "VOTE". He also uses symbolism because the polar bear is representing Alaska's environment as well as people and population. I agree with this political cartoon because I do not believe that American Imperialism was a positive chain of events. The cartoon shows it as a total waste of time and money.
